Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught her to say something through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an intern at a small studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
